Abstract:

This paper proposes multiport switched-capacitor multilevel inverter (SCMLI) topologies for high-frequency AC power distribution. Its asymmetric dc voltage sources and common ground make it ideal for renewable energy farms and electric vehicles. The proposed step-up SCMLI family achieves more output voltage steps with fewer components than several existing topologies. Capacitors are charged to a finite voltage every half cycle, solving capacitor voltage balancing. The variation of switching angles and THD with modulation indices under two staircase modulation strategies—selective harmonic elimination and minimum total harmonic distortion (THD)—is studied. The proposed family of topologies is analyzed. Experimental results validate simulation results for modulation schemes with equal and unequal output voltage waveform steps.
