Abstract:

Names and ages are valuable data for modern information systems. Identity management helps users manage and use their digital identities when using online services. A blockchain-based self-sovereign identity (SSI) system promotes peer-to-peer service authentication and authorization. Functional and quality principles and properties govern SSI systems. We found that SSI systems’ information security and privacy principles and properties violate laws, regulations, and technical standards. SSI system implementation and security and privacy must be supported by a compliance set of principles and properties. CSSPS, a new compliance SSI system property set, expands on the missing security and privacy controls specified in applicable laws, regulations, and technical standards. We used systematic comparative analysis and systematic review to identify inconsistent content from a vast collection of applicable sources and extend the SSI system’s properties. A qualitative evaluation found that the CSSPS improves security and privacy controls and matches real SSI system functionality. The CSSPS aids SSI system implementation by following information security and privacy standards. CSSPS can indirectly improve SSI system security and privacy.
