Abstract:

VANETs are being used in smart cities and intelligent transportation systems for various applications. VANET communications are difficult due to several factors. VANET clustering supports routing protocols and ensures reliability.

Clustering algorithms for VANETs operate in a decentralized mode, which requires additional stages before clustering decisions and may result in sub-optimality due to its local nature. Road architecture can also complicate clustering decisions.

Clusters in VANETs and 3D VANETs evolve, making this problem harder. This paper develops a Cauchy density model for VANETs in 3D road environments using centralized clustering. Traffic, mobility, driving behavior, and road curvature were simulated in the model. The simulator’s adjacency list defines road points and straight-line segments.

The Cauchy density model clusters vehicles by determining their mobility vectors. MATLAB runs complex scenarios in three 3D road environments. Our model outperforms selected benchmarks by 1%, 10%, and 3% for average cluster head duration, average cluster member duration, and clustering efficiency.
