Abstract:
Vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) offer advanced services that require vehicles to perform complex computing tasks that may not be completed within a delay limit. VANET typically improves service performance by offloading tasks to road side units (RSUs), but RSUs may not have enough resources to handle all requests.
Offloading tasks to other vehicles could replace RSU-based task offloading as vehicle computing capacities increase. However, vehicle mobility degrades delay performance, which has not been fully addressed in VANET vehicle-to-vehicle task offloading.
We propose an Online Pre-filtering Task Offloading System (OPTOS) to mitigate the effect of vehicle mobility on task offloading performance. OPTOS uses an HGSA algorithm to assign offloaded tasks to vehicles to minimize task completion delay while balancing vehicle computing capacities.
We extensively tested the proposed OPTOS using a real-world dataset. OPTOS reduces task completion delay and improves task success rate in VANET scenarios with different vehicle mobility.
