Abstract:

Low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) are popular in research due to their low power consumption, low cost, and wide geographical coverage. In smart city development, M2M communications, healthcare, intelligent transportation, industrial applications, climate-smart agriculture, and asset tracking, LPWAN technologies outperform short-range and traditional cellular wireless technologies.

LPWAN provides extensive coverage for low-power devices. This review paper discusses its design objectives and methods. We examine how the LPWAN architecture uses star and mesh topologies. We evaluate current and emerging LPWAN technologies, system architectures, and standards to meet each design objective.

In the current overview, LPWAN may coexist with other technologies to provide the best solution. After that, LPWAN technologies and market opportunities are compared. LPWAN use cases are analyzed for pros and cons. This helps choose LPWAN technology for different applications. Present open research questions and LPWAN design challenges before concluding.
