Abstract:

Brushless direct current motors with Hall sensors are used in many industrial and commercial applications due to their simplicity and low cost. Meanwhile, Hall sensor drive fault tolerant control (FTC) research has increased.

Motor drives must diagnose Hall-sensor faults and reconstruct faulty signals during FTC. In this context, we propose an innovative fast fault diagnosis (FFD) method for analyzing different fault cases and diagnosing faulty signal(s) in the shortest possible time. The FFD method can diagnose up to two faults simultaneously without vector-tracking observers and faster than other fault diagnosis methods.

Our simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms established methods, especially during transient operations. The proposed FFD method can be implemented in conventional drive systems through extra coding in controllers or as an auxiliary circuit due to the diagnostic algorithm’s simplicity.
