Abstract:

A solar photovoltaic (PV) array, battery energy storage (BES), diesel generator (DG) set, and grid-based electric vehicle (EV) charging station (CS) enable constant charging in islanded, grid-connected, and DG set connected modes.

The CS primarily charges the EV battery with a solar PV array and BES. In the absence of solar PV array generation and drained storage batteries, the CS automatically draws electricity from the grid or DG set.

To maximize fuel efficiency, DG set power is drawn at 80%–85% loading at all times. A mechanical speed governor is unnecessary because the CS adjusts generator voltage and frequency with the storage battery.

It also maintains unity power factor for grid or DG set power at nonlinear loading. To ensure continuous charging, the point of common connection voltage is synced to the grid/generator voltage. To improve operating efficiency, the CS transfers power from vehicles to grid, homes, and vehicles. Using the lab prototype, the CS is tested.
