Abstract:

Service-Based Systems (SBSs) and Software as a Service (SaaS) are emerging as cloud computing dominates software engineering. Cloud services handle many client requests. If many users need multiple Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, selecting the service instance for request can be difficult.

If we consider the compositeness of user applications, which consist of many tasks and calculate QoS properties across the composition, the problem becomes more complicated. This problem has no efficient or general solutions.

This paper proposes a fast heuristic method for multi-criteria service selection for multi-user composite workflows to meet all QoS requirements. A global-aware utility cost based on expected compositional QoS and iterative solution improvements break the problem into several transportation problems. Extensive experiments in both special and general cases show that the proposed method is more efficient (up to 5x faster) and more general than the alternatives.
