Mobile Computing Projects

Abstract:

Many mobile apps display messages, social media posts, account information, and verification codes. Mobile devices must display all such textual content but strongly protect it from unauthorized access. Today’s mobile malware can easily access other apps’ textual content.

SchrodinText, a system solution, strongly protects an application’s selected UI textual content from a fully compromised OS. SchrodinText uses ARM processor virtualization hardware and TrustZone to create a new security monitor.

Our novel techniques allow the OS to render text without access to the text, reducing the trusted computing base (TCB). Oblivious rendering allows the OS to rasterize and lay out all characters without access to the text.

The monitor resolves the right character glyphs onto the framebuffer observed by the user and protects them from the OS. Our prototypes demonstrate that SchrodinText has overhead but usable performance.
