Abstract:
Over the last decade, blockchain technology has enabled decentralization in many fields, including education. This paper provides a novel bibliometric and qualitative analysis of blockchain in education, including temporal development, emerging themes, and practical case studies on adoption and integration with existing educational technologies. We identify key players, demographic participation and adoption, hot topics, grey areas, and innovation opportunities. Blockchain in education only became popular five years ago, according to our analysis. This research also shows that most research has focused on reporting and verifying academic certificates and transcripts, while few have reported and connected in-depth academic records like learning behavior logs, learning contents, and assessment data. Current education blockchain systems ignore blockchain interoperability and the heterogeneity of academic data creation and consumption. Finally, we discuss our findings, potential solutions, and education blockchain research that can improve educational outcomes for stakeholders.
